Helen Groff Ransom
Helen Groff Ransom passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. She was a resident of the Wesley Health Care Center.
Born on May 13, 1923, she was the daughter of Truman and Margaret Groff, and a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs. After graduating from Saratoga Springs High School, Helen worked at the Van Raalte shirt factory in the city, while earning her degree from the Albany Business College.
Helen married George Ransom in 1967 and they built a successful business together in Watervliet, with George running the operations and Helen managing the office. Upon selling the business, they retired together to Ocala, Florida in the winter months. They enjoyed golf and entertaining in their home until George passed in 1994. Helen remained close to her siblings and their families ever since. She was a strong woman with a no-nonsense, direct approach which earned her the respect and admiration of those who knew her. Beneath it was a kind and generous spirit, who became a mother figure to her many nieces and nephews.
Her parents and siblings Howard Groff, Carolyn Brown and Janet Nassetta predeceased her. She is survived by her sister, Jane French; nephews John Kuznia, Christopher Kuznia, Colin Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Otis Groff, and Howard Groff; and nieces Jan Parton, Deborah Millis, Peggy Schober, Tami Rivas and Lori Atherton.
A graveside ceremony will be held at the Groff family plot at Green Ridge Cemetery in the springtime. Friends who wish to attend may contact John Kuznia at (518) 583-3080.

Esther Goldstein Shapiro, 93, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, after a short stay at Mary’s Haven in Saratoga Springs NY, with her loving daughter and granddaughter at her bed side.
She was born August 13, 1919 in Bronx, NY, the daughter of the late Henry and Dora Waxsman Goldstein.
Esther married the love of her life Max Shapiro, and they lived in Oceanside on Long Island until his passing in 1984.
While Esther was a mother and wife she attended Graduate School, at C.W. Post L.I.U. to become a School Librarian. She worked for West Hempstead High School, NY for many years.
The most important thing in Esther’s life was her Family, she loved them dearly. She loved traveling,cooking, crocheting, and giving compliments to others.
In 1998, she moved to Saratoga Springs to live with her daughter Sheila and granddaughter Nalina.
Sheila was her Caregiver at home until a few days before her passing.
Eshter is survived by; daughter, Sheila Shapiro, Wilton, NY; sons, Howard Shapiro (Marsha), Volcano, Hawaii and Richard Shapiro (Kendall),Tucson, AZ; granddaughter, Nalina Shapiro; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and loving friends.
Funeral service will be held in her honor at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at 9:00 AM with Rabbi Jonathan Rubenstein presiding.

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Robert Alleva passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Albany Medical Center Hospital of a heart attack. He was 87.Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Brooklyn, he was the son of Adelio and Margaret (Lombardi) Alleva. Robert grew up in Brooklyn and lived with his extended family, Angie, Albert, Rosie, John and Margaret. After graduating from high school, he served in World War II and Korea with the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific and the occupation of Japan.
Returning from Korea, he earned degrees from Brooklyn Polytech, a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and a master's degree in physics from Hofstra.
He was employed as an aerospace engineer with Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, N.Y., for more than 40 years. While at Grumman, he was instrumental in the development of the first lunar space module and helped to land it on the moon.
Robert will be remembered as a loving, father, husband, grandfather and companion. He enjoyed dancing and traveling and was proud of serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. His wife, Audrey, passed away in 1993.
He is survived by his fiancée, Charlotte DeGroff; a son, Robert S. Alleva and his significant other, Debra Scaparo; a daughter, Debra Zodda and her husband, Charles; his grandchildren, Alita Caporale and her husband, James, Monique Zodda, Lauren and Alexandra Alleva; his great-grandchildren, Bryce and Brayden Caporale; and the extended DeGroff family.
A service with military honors followed by entombment will be held at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.

Greenfield Center – Todd Comar Fisher, 45, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. He was born on May 6, 1967, in Glens Falls, NY, to William and Betty Jane Comar Fisher.
Todd married the love of his life, Christine Ann Vernon, on Sept. 1, 1991.
He had a great deal of love for his family, friends and pets. He was a loving father, caring son, a real family man, wonderful friend, talented artist and a hardworking employee. Todd worked for Stewart’s in the warehouse for 26 years. He was an artist who loved sketching and working with pastels and charcoal. Todd was on a bowling league, loved carpentry, and riding his ATV with his family.
He was a jokester and made everyone smile. He did not always have the right words, but he always knew the right thing to say. Todd was trusted by many and was always willing to help others.
Todd is survived by: his wife, Christine Fisher; parents William and Betty Jane Fisher; son, Tahlyn Fisher; daughter, Megan Bloom (Brian); brothers, Garth and Aaron Fisher; sisters, Rebecca Fisher (Ibon Izurieta) and Temple Genung (Daniel); sister-in-law, Patrice Foster; brother in-law, Daniel Vernon (Robin); 11 nieces and nephews and many pets.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY. Friends and family may call on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home.

June Henning Sherman 85, died peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2013 with her family at her side, at Saratoga Care Nursing Home, Saratoga Springs, NY. She was born August 28, 1927 in Saratoga Springs, NY, the daughter of the late William and Marion Sickler Henning. She married the love of her life, Glenn Sherman, He predeceased her in 1997.
June was a licensed masseuse, she worked for the NY State Bath House, Saratoga Springs for many years, also she worked for Saratoga ARC and Office of The Aging in Ballston Spa, as an Aid and Bus Driver.
Glenn and June were involved in the Development of the Special Olympics in Saratoga.
June was well known for open door policy where everyone was welcome for a cup of coffee.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Saratoga Sp., NY
June is survived by: daughters, Linda Sherman and Lori Evans; brothers William Henning Jr. (Eleanor) and Gerald Sickler (Cecile).
A funeral service will be held on Thursday January 10, 2013, at 11:00 AM, at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY, Where friends and family may call on Wednesday January 9, 2013, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

GANSEVOORT - Sharon Lee (Clark) Cooper passed way Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, of a sudden illness at age 67.
She was the daughter of Edward H. Clark Sr. and Gloria (Van Dusen) Clark. They settled in Gansevoort.
On June 30, 1979, she married Robert D. Cooper. Sharon was involved during the founding years of Wilton Emergency Squad as secretary, dispatcher and 10-year life member. She was an amateur radio operator, using the call letters K2WCE and KD5FSH.
She leaves her husband, Robert D. Cooper of Gansevoort; three children, Shawn Edward Almy of Fort Worth, Texas, Melodie Faith Smith of Georgetown, La., and Stephanie Anne Cooper of Saratoga Springs. She is survived by six grandchildren with ages ranging from 2 to 23; and two brothers, Edward H. Clark Jr. and wife Marsha of North Carolina and Dana A. Clark and wife Robin Clark of Greenwich.
Services will be private.

Miss. Maher was a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. She retired from the Golub (Price Chopper) Corporation in Rotterdam where she worked in the Accounting Department. She was a communicant of St. Clements Church in Saratoga Springs.
Ann enjoyed spending time gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed traveling and winning at the Racino.
She is survived by two sisters Margaret A. Martin of Albany and Katherine LeClair (Gene) of Two Rivers Wisconsin; nieces and nephews; William Martin (Lori) of Rotterdam, Joy McAlister (Frank) of Albany, Charles Dooley of Dalton, MA, Daniel Dooley of Canastota, Kenneth Dooley of Wilton, Kelly Booth (Michael) , Patrick Dooley (Laura), Jeffrey Dooley, Sean Dooley (Stacey) of the Town of Saratoga, Christopher Dooley of New York City, Benjamin LeClair (Diana) Albuquerque, NM, and Joshua LeClair (Katie) of Fargo, ND and many great nieces and nephews.
