John Swersky

John Swersky, age 46, passed away on Saturday, March 29^th, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital.

He was born on October 16^th, 1967 in Northampton MA, the son of David and Jane Fleming Swersky.

John, a graduate of the Riverdale Country School, attended Skidmore College and enjoyed reading, listening to music, philophizing, and taking long walks in nature.

John is survived by his father and step mother David and Jayne Swersky and his two half siblings, as well as a half-sister Blaine Dunham Birchby.

Clarence “Al” Bishop Sr.

Clarence “Al” Bishop Sr., age 79, passed away after a accidental fall on the ice at his home on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Albany Medical Center.

Al was born on May 22, 1934 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. to the late, Nelson and Helen Butterfield Bishop.

He was educated in Saratoga Springs and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Al married the love of his life and best friend Florence Perry on August 24, 1955 and they spent 58 wonderful years together.

Paul Ellsworth Pugh, Sr.

Paul Ellsworth Pugh, Sr., 67, of Ballston Spa, NY passed away peacefully Monday March 10, 2014 at his home. 

Paul was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1947 the son of the late Charles and Louise Beaty Pugh.

After serving in the US Navy, he married Nadine Draves  in Saratoga Springs, where they raised their family. He graduated from Siena College and was a retired NY State computer specialist.

Clifford (Kip) E. Barody

Clifford (Kip) E. Barody of Sweet Road passed away Monday, March 10, 2014 at Glens Falls Hospital following a long battle with cancer.  He was 72.

Born on October 20, 1941 in Glens Falls, NY, he was the youngest of 14 children born to Joseph and Maude (Denno) Barody.

Clifford retired from the Lehigh Cement Company in Glens Falls where he was employed for many years.

His wife Lois (MacDonald) Barody died in 1999.

Candace Cherry Salvi

Saratoga Springs, NY

Candace Cherry Salvi, 66, passed away on Friday March 7, 2014, at her home with her loving sons and Carmine at her side.  She was born on November 27^th, 1948, in Saratoga Springs, NY the daughter of the late Richard J. and Kathryn Morris Cherry.

Candace grew up in Saratoga attending Saratoga Springs, High School.

She enjoyed Reading, Arts & Crafts and the Horses.

Margaret B. Gustafson

Margaret B. Gustafson, 88, passed away on Wednesday March 3, 2014 at Wesley Health Care in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Margaret was born on November 15, 1925 in Elizabeth, New Jersy the daughter of the late Elmer and Hilma Johansson Ulrickson.

Margaret grew up in Connecticut graduating from Greenwich, High School.

She married the love of her life John C. Gustafson he preceded her on April 2, 1990.

Margaret had a great love for animals and Music.  She loved spending time with her family and friends.

Nina Hikari Martino

Nina Hikari Martino (Pettigrew), 53, of Saratoga Springs N.Y., passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born on June 28, 1960 in New Haven Connecticut the daughter of John and Kazuko Uchida Pettigrew.

       She graduated from Saratoga Springs High school, attended sessions at Juilliard pre-college and classes at Skidmore College. She was a musician and an artist, sculpting was her favorite art medium. She spent many years sculpting and assisting at the Skidmore art department.

       Nina will be remembered for her infectious sense of humor, kindred spirit and big heart. She touched the lives of many children in the neighborhood bedsides her son and daughter.  Nina had a soft spot in her heart for children, the elderly and anyone that would be considered an underdog in our society. This even included her four legged friends that she called her little animals. Nina was a strong Christian believer with the outer and inner beauty of an angel. She also possessed a beautiful singing voice. Today she sings with the other angels in heaven.

      She was predeceased by her father John Phillips Pettigrew. Survivors include her son John J. Martino of Saratoga Springs; her daughter Juliet (Mikey) Martino of Saratoga Springs; her mother Kazuko Pettigrew; her companion John Swizersky; her sisters, Elaine Hurley, Ingrid Keys and Bethany Maglione; her nieces Tomiko and Michelle; her nephews Dustin and Mark; her ex-husband and friend for life John R. Martino.

       Calling hours will be held at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue, (Rte. 9) Saratoga Springs N.Y., on Tuesday March 4th from 4 pm to 7 pm.  In lieu of flowers or contributions, Nina’s wishes would best be served by a random act of kindness or a smile to one in need.  She was a very strong believer in pay it forward.

Robert F. Kearns

Robert Kearns passed away January 28 2014 with his loving family at his side in Myrtle Beach, SC.

He was born on January 14, 1938 in Glens Falls, NY.

Bob was the owner of Doty Machine Works, in Fort Edward, NY and co- owned Carolina Dream Machines with his daughter Amy in Conway, SC.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie (Tilford) Kearns. His 7 children. MaryBeth Kearns of Rochester, NY. Bob Kearns of Delaware, Ohio. Jackie Boggs and her husband Kip of Delaware, Ohio Chris Kearns and his wife Christine of Hudson Falls, NY. Darryl Kearns of Argyle, NY. Matt Kearns and his wife Krissy of Delaware, Ohio. And Amy Brown of Myrtle Beach, SC. 11 grandchildren and one great grandson.  Sister Joan Talley (Jim) of Wilmington, Delaware. Brothers Roger(Sherry) Kearns of Lake George, NY Jerry (Sue) Kearns of Hudson Falls, NY. David (Sandy) Kearns of Hartford, NY. Terry (Cindy) Kearns of Fort Edward, NY. Along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held on Friday January 31^st in South Carolina with all of Bobs children, some of his grandchildren and several of his close friends in attendance. Kip Boggs, Bobs son in law spoke of Bob in a loving, cheerful manner. Many of Bobs golfing buddies told of the adventures one under took while golfing with him. Others spoke of the lead foot Bob had while driving anything with a motor.

A local Memorial Service will be held at the Kingsbury Fire House in the spring and a full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Post Star prior to the service.

John Thomas Fischer

Gansevort

John Thomas Fischer, 59, of Gansevoort passed away on January 30, 2014, bringing his battle with COPD to an end as he was reunited with The Lord.  John was born on August 9, 1954 as the son of John Edward Fischer and Camilla Notargiacomo Fischer in Astoria, NY.  He spent much of his life in the garment industry and other management positions, including his work with the Salvation Army in New York and Massachusetts.  John loved to tell stories and to make others laugh.  In the final months of his life he often reflected on how much family meant to him, and expressed how thankful he was for the meaningful relationships he’d been able to establish with them.  

John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Charlie and Laura Wilson of Elmira, NY, son Matthew Fischer of Wilmington, NC, and son and daughter-in-law Justin and Kristy Fischer of Gansevoort, NY, as well as his grandchildren Joshua, Jeffery, and Adam Wilson, Marcy and Marley Fischer, and Jacob, Kaitlynn, Elijah, and Benjamin Fischer.  He is also survived by his mother Camilla Fischer of Valley Stream, NY, his sister AnnMarie O’Malley of Valley Stream, NY, his brother Larry Fischer of Myrtle Beach, SC, and his sister Toni Dempsey of Long Beach, NY.  John was predeceased by his father, John Edward Fischer.

Benita Ann Durr

Benita Ann Durr entered into eternal life unexpectedly on January 29^th, 2014 at the age of 43. 

Born August 1^st, 1970 in Orlando, FL.   She was the daughter of Rev. Rose Durr and the late Robert Durr, Sr.

Benita will be remembered to all her family and friends as a great compassionate outgoing individual.  She will be greatly missed by all.

She is predeceased by her father Robert Durr, Sr. and sister Rosa Marie Durr.

She is survived by her mother, the Rev. Rose Durr; her son Eddie Lorman, Jr.; her daughters Zanasia Wicks and Habiba Ibrahim.  Her brothers Timothy Loving and Robert Durr, Jr. and sister Theresa Durr, dear friend; Donald E. Myers, cherished cousin; Shanda Steward and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 4^th, 2014 at the Universal Baptist Temple, 25 Washington St, Saratoga Springs. 

Friends and family may call from 11:00am – 11:45am on Tuesday, February 4^th, 2014 from 11:00am – 11:45am at the Universal Baptist Temple, prior to the service.

Colleen Ann Ouimet,

MIDDLEGROVE

Colleen Ann Ouimet, age 58, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 30^th, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital with her loving family at her side.

She was born on July 28^th, 1955 in Manhattan, NY to the late Patrick and Ruthmary (Doyle) Sheils.

She grew up in Glenwood Landing, NY.

She married Stephen Ouimet on November 8, 2003

Colleen worked as Director of Personnel Service at St Christopher-Ottilie Residential Treatment Center in Sea Cliff, NY for 35 years.  She had a significant impact on a countless number of children in need, always willing to lend a helping hand, doing whatever needed to get done – no task too big or small or difficult.

Colleen enjoyed time with her family - especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Colleen retired to Saratoga Springs in 2006 to be near her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, who were the light of her life. 

Colleen is survived by her loving husband Stephen Ouimet Sr., her son Stephen Ouimet  (Lauren), grandchildren: Kyle, Ella and Elijah, sisters: Erin (Tim) Fallon and Ruthmary Sheils, brothers: Neil, Patrick (Cindy) and Terrence (Jane) Sheils, nieces and nephews: Jessica, Patrick, Carey, Charlotte, Kisha, Ryan, Kevin, Kerri, Timmy and Emma.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Ruthmary Sheils.

A mass will be held at 10:00am on Monday, February 3^rd 2014 at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.  Friends and family may call on Sunday, February 2^nd 2014 from 1-3pm at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave (Rt 9), Saratoga Springs, New York.

Katherine M. Stewart

Saratoga Springs, Katherine M. Stewart, 94, passed away on Friday January 24, 2014 at Wesley Health Care.

Katherine was born in Schuylerville NY, on December 23, 1919 the daughter of the late Marty and Mary Smith.

Katherine worked for many years at the Van Raalte Knitting Mill in Saratoga Springs NY, She married Thomas J. Stewart who predeceased her. 

Katherine enjoyed reading and going to garage sales, She was loved by all who knew her.

Katherine is survived by many loving nieces and nephews who will miss her.

She was the sister of the late Martin, Mick and Stephen Smith, and sister Susan.

A graveside service and burial will take place on Wednesday April 30th, 2014, 2:00 pm at the South Wilton Cemetery on Rte 50.

The family would like to thank the staff and friends at Wesley Health Care for all the care, love and support they showed Katherine during her time there.

Ruth E. Alsop

Saratoga Springs

Ruth Alsop – 82, passed away at home, surrounded by her family,  on January 23^rd after a short illness. 

She was born on February 24^th, 1931 in Melrose, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late William and Mary O’Neil Condell.  She attended St. Mary’s Academy in Melrose, after which she attended Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, where she received her Master’s degree in Music.  She also attended the Yale School of Music, eventually moving to Colorado to further her study in music.

She was a cellist for 50+ years with the New York City Orchestra Ballet.  She toured with Columbia Artists with the Gotham Trio.  Ruth was also a cellist for the Radio City Music Hall and taught music at Brooklyn College and Potsdam University for many years.  When the Statue of Liberty reopened, Ruth played with Frank Sinatra at the ceremonies.  She owned Schoolhouse Antiques in Saratoga.

Ruth is survived by her daughter Marin Alsop and her Partner Kristin Jurkscheit  of Baltimore, MD; Sisters M. Elaine Love of Saratoga Springs, NY., Clair Meuse of Wilton, ME., Nancy Green of Wakefield, MA; Beloved grandson, Auden Alsop, 11 nieces and nephews and many, great-nieces and nephews and adored friends.

Service in honor of Ruth will be held on Saturday January 25, 2014, 11 a.m., at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. (Rte. 9), Saratoga Springs, NY.

Family and friends are invited to call from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at Compassionate Funeral Care Funeral Home.

The family will hold a Tribute to Ruth’s amazing life later in the year.

Gary Carter

Gary Carter, 51, of Saratoga Springs, quietly passed away unexpectedly on Monday January 13th, 2014 at St Peter’s Hospital, Albany, NY.

He was born on April 1st, 1962 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the son of the late Gerald and Madeline Rethman Carter. 

Gary worked for Saratoga County DPW as an attendant at the Clifton Park Recycling Center.

Gary lived and worked in the community his whole life, always willing to help his family or friends at moments noticed. He loved riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his longtime girlfriend Lynda DeFoe; son Brian Carter (Ashley); daughter, Shelbie Carter (Brandon); brothers, William “Bill” (Debby), James “Jim” (Sherri), and Gerald (Pam) Carter; sister Eileen Dingmon (Mike); grandsons, James Dobson and Avery Dashner; granddaughter, Madison Watts; Lynda’s children, Kenny, Zack and Brandon; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service in honor of Gary will be held on Saturday, January 18^th, 2014, 12 noon, at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue (route 9), Saratoga Springs, New York.

Calling hours for friends and family will be held on Friday January 17^th, from 6-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 to 11:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.

 Interment will be in the North Milton Cemetery in the spring.

Reinhard Mayer

Reinhard Mayer died of cancer on Tuesday, December 24^th, 2013 in his home in Saratoga Springs, NY. His daughter, Shanti, and friend, Sharon Nolan, were at his side. He was a professor of German Language and Literature, teaching courses in German Philosophy, Music and Literature, Comparative Literature, Translation Theory and Practice, and Holocaust Studies. Friends and colleagues described him as a gentle man, quietly determined and inventive, who gave generously and colorfully, without concern for reciprocity.

Born in Pforzheim, Germany on August 1^st,1942, to mother, Wallis (Hartge) Mayer, and father, Roman Mayer, Reinhard immigrated with his parents and older brother Roger, to N. Providence, RI in 1949. Graduating from N. Providence High School in 1960 as a most humorous class president and State Champion cross country runner, he continued his education first at the University of Rhode Island and then at Tufts University in Medford, Ma. Earning a Fulbright Scholarship brought him to his graduate studies at the Eberhard Karls Universitaet in Tuebingen, Germany. He went on to study and teach at the Freie Universitaet in West Berlin, completing his PhD at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1978. While in Germany he married Patricia Brink with whom he had a daughter, Shantia, in 1965.

Reinhard happily spent a major part of his career as head of the German Program in the Literature and Languages Division at Bennington College (1973-1994). From there he moved to the German Departments of both Skidmore and Wheaton Colleges, as well as to teaching a diverse array of on-line courses for University Without Walls and New York University. In 2010 he was invited to the University of Illinois to help shape a new Center for Translation Studies. Working with Elizabeth Lowe, mentoring graduate students, and being closely involved with the publishers at Dalkey Press was an extremely satisfying experience for him. As a teacher, mentor, friend, scholar, and thinker, he was widely admired. Continually inspired by and inspiring to his students, he will be greatly missed.

Reinhard had the pleasure of working on and publishing numerous translations throughout his lifetime, the most recent being: “Animation.CH: Vision and Versatility in Swiss Animated Film” in 2011 and “Modern and Contemporary Swiss Poetry” in 2012. His dissertation was expanded and published as a book, “Fremdlinge im eigenen Haus” by Peter Lang Publishing in 1996.

Of the many professional organizations to which he belonged, he was particularly proud of being appointed by the Executive Council of the MLA to the Committee on Academic Freedom and Professional Rights and Responsibilities (2008-2011). There he argued against the current drift toward corporate expediency in American education.

Reinhard had a great love for theatre and opera.  He played a sensitive, soulful harmonica and did a stunning imitation of Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot. He loved walking barefoot in the wet grass on summer mornings, was a surprisingly creative cook, elegant ice skater, and had a vast knowledge of every swimming hole, waterfall, lake, stream, and creek in the greater Southern Vermont area.

He is survived by daughter Shantia Mayer, brother Roger Mayer, sister-in-law Sandra Mayer, cousins Roman Mayer and Eddie Mayer, cousins Sanni (Hartge) Zogorski, Brenton Morgenstern, Steven Morgenstern and families, nephew Nickolas Mayer and family, and niece Anneliese Mayer.  There will be a memorial gathering to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Reinhard’s memory to Doctors Without Borders.

Julia DiPalma Tropia

Julia DiPalma Tropia passed away age 98 on January 7, 2014 at Nathan Littauer Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born June 27, 1915, and a lifelong resident of Gloversville, NY, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Louis Tropia, her parents, Antonio and Annunziata DiPalma, sister Ruth Granito, brothers Andrew, Mario, and Louis DiPalma and special niece Mary Lou Shepard.

She is survived by her daughters Louise (Robert) Young, Wilton, NY and Ann Larraine Reffue (Buzz Bassette), Lassellsville, NY;  grandchildren John Reffue, Tampa, FL, Lorraine (David) Lavender, Marietta, GA, Tracy (Christopher) Goodridge, Bridgewater, NJ, Douglas (Eliana) Reffue, Hingham, MA, and Robert (Christine) Young, Katonah, NY;  great-grandchildren  Thomas and Jessie Reffue, Olen and Aaron Lavender, Jonathan and Marshall Goodridge, Lauren and Sam Reffue,  Grace and Hope Young;  great-niece Lorraine Peck, Rotterdam and her sons Stephen and Eric Peck as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church and a Friend of the Gloversville Public Library.

Friends are invited to gather for a memorial service at The First Congregational Church, 31-33 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Family visitation will be held in the church lounge from 12-1:00 pm preceding the memorial service.

Interment will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gloversville Public Library, 58 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 or a charity of choice.

Cornelia C. Needham Rist White

Cornelia C. White, 99, went home to her Lord on January 5, 2014.  She was born on September 25, 1914 the daughter of the late Edsion and Florence Van Schaick Needham in Hudson Falls NY.

Cornelia who was also known as Connie or Nean, was a very gifted and talented lady, helping her sister in seamstress work and her husband building houses in Florida as well as New York, always busy.

Connie took a few painting lessons and ended up with many great paintings that was enjoyed by all until her eye sight failed her.  She also played music by ear, was famous for her skits and making music with teapots and crystal glasses.   Although she never took lessons she enjoyed playing the organ.

Connie was known as Cocoa the Clown, and also the Pie Lady, she was famous for baking pies for many years at Lake Cossayuna, New York, she made nearly 350 pies for the weekends!

Connie was a member of The Red Hats “Naughty Ladies of Shady Lane Club”, and she joined the American Legion post #252 in Breese, Ill when her grandson Mark Nelson Rist served in the Gulf War.

Connie belonged to the Ladies book club and she had her own Kitchen Band and the ladies would do their performances while living in Illinois.

Connie is survived by: daughter in-law, Barbara L. Churchill Rist Liebig of South Hartford, NY; grandsons, Raymond and Kelli Rist of Beckemeyer, Ill., Stephen and Kathy Rist of Argyle, NY, Russell Rist of Hudson Falls, NY and Marrk and Jean Rist of Beckemeyer, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Michael, Alicia, Adrianna, Hayley, Rylan, Nolan Rist and Josh Tucker; great great-grandson, Ryder Andrew Patrick; step-daughter, Violia White Ingalsbe and Bruce; grand-daughter, Robin and Raymond Felice and great grandchildren and family of Bridgewater, NJ; grandson Ronald and Kim Ingalsbe and great grandchildren and family of Hazelton, PA; granddaughter, Dawn and Joe Viella and great grandchildren  Shelby, Michael, Jennifer, 1 great great-grandchild and 1 great great great-granddaughter Zoey Rose Marie (making it the 6^th generation) and family of Schuylerville, NY; many nieces and nephews;

Connie was preceded in death by her first husband Millard Alanson Rist, died in 1939 and second husband Earl Henry White died in 1999. Her daughter Florence May Stockwell , died in 1980, and son Nelson Millard Rist, died in 2001.  Her granddaughter Connie Marie Stockwell, sister Cecil Needham O’Dell and brother Lewis Needham.

Doris Margaret Venner Haberland

Doris Venner Haberland, 79 a longtime resident of Colonie passed away Monday, December 23^rd at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, NY after a long and difficult battle with Dementia.  She is now back in the loving arms of her husband Raymond who predeceased her in July 2011.

Doris was born on February 6, 1934 in Schroon Lake, NY to Earl and Dora Venner, “one of the coldest days on record,” as she would tell. Doris moved to Albany at the age of 16 and worked in downtown Albany at Lerner’s and Whitney’s. She was married to her beloved husband, Raymond Frederick Haberland on May 5^th, 1952 in Amarillo, TX where Raymond was stationed in the Air Force.  Their married life together spanned 59 years.  They were blessed with three sons who survive her, Steven (Elaine) of Cody Wyoming, David (Brenda) of Delanson, NY and Mark (Lynn) of Greenfield Center, NY.

She is also survived by her granddaughter Dena (Don) DeLude of Latham and their children Jase and Alana, grandson Shane Haberland of Denver, Colorado, granddaughter Gina Carbone, great granddaughter Daphne and great grandson Nicholas.

Doris was loved by many nieces and nephews, her longtime and best friends Fran Maurel, of Colonie , and Miles and Marilyn Seeley of Schroon Lake. She also had much love for “daughter” Karen (Mike) Gasiorowski of Clifton Park.

Doris was a wonderful, loving and caring woman who had a zest for life, friends and family. She and Ray loved spending their summers in Schroon Lake

A funeral service will be held to celebrate Doris’s life on Saturday December 28^th, 2013, 11 a.m., at Compassionate Funeral Care Inc. (402 Maple Ave also known as Rte. 9, Saratoga Springs, NY) where friends and family may call from 9:45 – 10:45 prior to the service.  Interment will be held on May 5^th, 2014, 11:00 am on Ray and Doris’s anniversary in Paradox Cemetery, Schroon Lake, NY.

Monica Phillips Loughney

Monica Phillips Loughney, 98, passed away on Dec. 18, 2013, at Wesley Community, Saratoga Springs, NY, of heart failure. She was born on Sept. 2, 1915 in Philadelphia, PA the daughter of the late Benjamin and Gertrude Mount Phillips.

At 98, she lived long, enjoyed much, and most of all, her beloved great grandchildren kept her young at heart and in spirit. 

Survived by her daughter, Winnie Baden; grand-daughters Shawna Paul (Douglas) and Sasha Taitz (Barry); great-grandchildren Riland and Johannan Paul and Jared and Payton Taitz. 

Retired as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Temple University in Philadelphia, after 30-years of devoted service.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013 @ 10:00 AM, Old St. Joseph's Church, 321 Willings Alley, Philadelphia, PA.

Nancy Pitts, 54, passed away on December 12, 2013 in Saratoga Springs, NY.

She was born on August 20, 1959 the daughter of the late Edwin and Ella Walker Kuhl.

Nancy is survived by her son Christopher Pitts and Daughter Katherine Kuhl.

Margaret Wellman Roberts Casey

Margaret Wellman Roberts Casey, 90, of Ballston Spa, NY went to be with The Lord on December 13, 2013. Meg was born on September 7, 1923 to Maynard and Nellie (Mansfield) Wellman in Rome NY. She was the stepdaughter of Sarah (Ferguson) Wellman. Meg grew up in Rome, NY with a large loving family where she developed her love of camping. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. She married William "Bill" Henry Roberts on February 21, 1943 and was his beloved wife for 25 years and had three loving children, Linda, Peter, and Janellen. Her family was the most important thing to her, and Meg was always there for her family and her family always came first. Meg enjoyed her time camping, volunteering in her children's activities, and raising her children. She was President of the Mother's Club, and a Brownie Girl Scout Leader. As grandchildren were added she embraced them and loved to spend time with them. She spent countless time with her family at her beloved Raquette Lake.

She worked at Utica State Hospital. Following Bill's death she went back to school and went on to earn her Associates Degree at Adirondack Community College and became a Registered Nurse. She worked for many years for New York State in the Wilton Developmental Center. Nursing was her passion and expressed her joy in serving and caring for others. She worked there until she retired, but she continued her life of caring with her grandchildren.

She married Paul J. Casey on October 4, 1974 in Inlet, NY and was his wife and companion for 22 years.

Meg was a strong determined person that met adversity head-on. She was always thoughtful, giving and caring. She embodied the principle of putting others first. Meg had a very strong faith and was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

Meg was pre-deceased by her two husbands, William "Bill" Roberts and Paul Casey.

She is survived by her three brothers Maynard Wellman (Judy), Ronnie Wellman, and Bruce Wellman (Pam) and two sisters Eileen Wellman McHale (Ken) and Marion Wellman Raines (Earl - deceased), her three children Linda Roberts Matson (Art), Peter Roberts (Patricia), and Janellen Roberts Clark (Jeff), and her beloved grandchildren Arthur Matson IV, Christine (Matson) Strack, Emily (Clark) McPhee, Sarah (Clark) Quarles, William Clark, Deanna Roberts, Catherine Clark and Jennifer Roberts. She was also blessed with 9 great-grandchildren and was awaiting the birth of her tenth. She is also survived by dear friends including her closest friend Barbara Sorrell.

A funeral service will be held in honor of Margaret at 11am on December 18th, 2013 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave (Rt 9), Saratoga Springs, New York with the Reverend Richard Hoffman officiating.  Friends and family may call from 10-11am prior to the service, at the funeral home.  Interment will be at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, Sauquoit, New York in the springtime.

Linda Mae Krywy

Linda Mae Krywy peacefully passed away at 8:50AM on December 11, 2013 in Saratoga Hospital with her loving brother standing at her bedside. Her life was disrupted in April of 2010 by the diagnosis of a very stubborn and nearly always fatal, malignant glioblastoma-multiforme brain tumor. She underwent two surgeries over the next twenty-seven months.  In conjunction with other conventional treatment for her form of brain cancer, she partook in clinical trials to help gain useful data that could be used for the treatment of other sufferers of this horrible disease. In addition to conventional treatments as well as trial drugs, she also used a state-of-the-art device in her treatment, the Novocure TTF-100A.  The Novocure TTF-100A performed most favorably during her battle against this disease. Despite a most valiant effort, Linda was never able to return to her pre-cancer “old-self,” and that truly frustrated her. Over a total of more than forty-four months from first diagnosis, she fought a courageous fight. Through it all, Linda never lost her faith and her strong love for God; she never lost her love for her family and dear friends. In true Linda like fashion, she never lost her ever-glowing sweetness, which was present in the smile on her lips as she drew her last breath…

Linda was born at 11:43am, on February 10, 1957 to the late Henry Krywy and Frances Hika Krywy in the Village of Ballston Spa, New York. Linda will be fondly remembered by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She lived the definition of the kind of person most would like to be remembered as but only a very select few ever reach. Linda leaves behind her brother Don Krywy of Ballston Spa, New York, sister Karen Rush of Scotia, New York and sister Mary Ann Baratta & brother-in-law Paul Baratta of Belmont, Massachusetts. Our Linda had the distinction of being the youngest of the fourteen members of her generation of the Krywy bloodline.  She will be truly missed not only by her siblings but also her three nephews and seven nieces, her great-niece, and many cousins as well as the countless friends who have come to know Linda over the past fifty-six years Linda has been with us. She will also be remembered by those she stopped to visit with while walking her ‘best buddy’, her beagle Patch. Patch is also gone, having passed away on Christmas Eve 2012. Her soul and her caring spirit are now in heaven with God, her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and family members and friends who went ahead of her. We who knew her loved her, and we always will. Our cherished memories of Linda will remain forever etched in our hearts and minds. I believe and accept that God had a plan for her to call her away as He did. I am a better person for having been Linda’s brother, my loving thanks to her spirit, she was a truly special woman…

Linda had an extensive academic career. After graduation from Ballston Spa High School, she attended Mitchell College in Connecticut. She then transferred to and graduated from Syracuse University with a dual major in biology and forestry. Continuing her education, she moved to and attended the University of Maine, then on to Portland, Oregon where she attended and graduated from Oregon Center for Oriental Medicine (OCOM). Linda took her final boards in California and became a board-certified acupuncturist enabling her to practice acupuncturist anywhere in the country. Linda chose to return home and open her Adirondack Acupuncture locally. Linda practiced acupuncture in Saratoga, Fulton & Montgomery Counties until April 2010 when her diagnosis of brain cancer forced her to give up her practice. The cancer prevented her from practicing acupuncture with the ability and confidence she required of herself. Linda made many friends through her acquaintances with her clients. Her clients along with their family members came to know her as more than just the acupuncture lady but as their friend…

Linda has been referred to as being “tree-like” by her childhood & life-long friend, Nancy because of Linda’s special love of the outdoors. She lived on her land in the Adirondack forest for a number of years before being stricken with cancer in her Mongolian styled yurt (she erected the yurt mostly on her own with only minimal help from friends and family). The yurt was without the convenience of having electricity & running water but Linda managed comfortably through all four seasons year after year.

Linda was an accomplished lifelong musician, playing guitar, banjo, ‘fiddle’, mandolin, penny whistles, harmonica, piano, keyboard-synthesizer, and probably more. She enjoyed playing music along with her father Henry ‘Hank’ Krywy and her other musician friends and family members. She also enjoyed painting pictures, fishing, skiing, hiking, snow shoeing, almost any outdoor activity and at the top that list was spending time with her loving beagle companion, Patch. Linda’s strength in her faith was a source of solace in times she was in need of a spiritual “pick-me-up” throughout her battle with brain cancer. Reading scripture was a major source of Devine spiritual comfort and relief for her through those tough times…

Linda’s goal in life was to become a nice, little old lady and to be a good servant to God. Her life came to an end before she was able to fully achieve this goal. Linda never became the little ‘old’ lady of her goal, but she truly accomplished being a very special ‘nice’ lady, an exceptionally devout servant to God and close sister and friend to all of us who had the pleasure of knowing her over the fifty-six years she was with us…

Barbara Elizabeth Lane

Barbara E. Lane, of Greenfield Center, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013 of a sudden illness at Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Springs, NY. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Stanley and Elsie (Groll) Lake, Barbara was born on April 8, 1938 in Manhattan, NY.

The Lake family moved to Amityville in 1952 where Barbara graduated from Amityville Memorial High School in 1955. She worked at Glen Cove Hospital as a lab technician. She was married to Gary Meyers Ziegenfelder from 1957 to 1978. She then attended Grumman Data Systems where she received her computer programming certification.

She married John Lane in 1986 and they moved to Greenfield Center in 1987. Barbara worked for many years as a computer programmer for Jardine Group Services and Davis Vision of Schenectady, NY.

Barbara was a passionate volunteer for the causes she cared about. She was a Girl Scout leader in her earlier years with her sister Nancy in Amityville, Long Island. In the 1960’s she modeled  positive race relations for young people. She spent years working for the Okeanos Ocean Research Foundation as a research assistant. Even as her mobility waned she continued to stay involved by being a patron of a child through PLAN International USA and supporting the arts at SPAC. She traveled in the U.S. and abroad and enjoyed reading, especially philosophy, playing Sudoku, using Facebook, and spending time with her family and friends. She was an enthusiastic animal lover who loved to watch the wildlife traveling through her beloved backyard.

Barbara was not only a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and aunt to us all, she was a confidant and friend. After listening to our thoughts she always counseled us to forgive and love each other. Her warm smile and generous, loving ways will make it difficult for us to say goodbye. Her best loved recipes such as Shish Kabob, Cornell Salad, Barbeque Flank Steak, and Parsley Onion Bread will continue to be enjoyed by us for generations to come.

Barbara was a deeply spiritual woman whose faith in the wisdom of the universe carried her throughout her life. One of her favorite sayings was, “I just trust God to give me what I need.” She took great comfort in nature and private contemplation.

She is survived by her husband, John Lane; her beloved daughters, Lisa Newkirk (Larry) and Susan Castagna (Joseph); grandsons Larry Newkirk Jr and Willie Garrett Newkirk. She is also survived by a niece, Erica Peterson Evans, a nephew, Bryan Thomas Peterson (Jeanine) and great-nephew Harrison Peterson, “adopted” grandson Anthony Hall, as well as many relations and longtime friends.

She was predeceased by her sister, Nancy Peterson (Lake)

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 14, 2013, 3pm at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue (Rte. 9) in Saratoga Springs, NY  584-4844, where family and friends are welcomed to call from 2-3pm prior to the service at Compassionate Funeral Care.

Dorothy Theresa Knorr

Dorothy Theresa Knorr, age 80, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 as a result of an automobile accident in Clifton Park.

She was born on October 15th, 1933 in Albany, NY to the late Harry Schramm and Adeline Geary.  She married Gerald Knorr in 1958 and raised her family in Saratoga Springs.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Gerald; son, Gerald Jr.; daughter, Theresa Knorr and son-in-law Adolfo Suero; daughter Charleen Knorr; brother, Harry Schramm, sister-in-law, Denise, sister-in-law, Rosemary; daughter-in-law Fran; grandchildren, Mickey Knorr and wife Shannon, Heather Elie and husband John, Timothy Dow, Jordan Dow, Nina Knorr, Aron Knorr and great grandchildren, Kiara, Sophia, Madelyn, Martin, Mason and soon to be, Alexis Dorothy Lee.

She was a wife of 55 years and beloved mother and grandmother.  She retired from the State University of New York at Albany after 18 years of service.  She was an artist and loved to knit and crochet and sold her wares at local craft fairs.

Thomas Vincent Pravda

Thomas Pravda, 51, of Stillwater, passed away suddenly after a tragic accident in Saratoga Springs on November 10, 2013. 

He was born on October 11, 1962 the son of George and Gertraud (Mangold) Pravda in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Thomas graduated from Saratoga High School.  Thomas worked for many years at the family business Lakeside Market making his well-known subs and pizza; he also was the Owner/Operator of Saratoga Masonry Cleaners for many years. Thomas was very instrumental in the early sub-divisions of the family properties.  

Thomas enjoyed riding his motorcycle, snowmobiling, horses, traveling, spending time with his family and friends, and maintaining his large yard. 

He is survived by his daughter, Karleigh Daigneault (Justin); mother Gertraud Pravda; father George Pravda; grandson Mason Daigneault; uncle Frank Pravda; aunt Helen Pesch; and many cousins.


Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013,  12:00 noon, at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs 584-4844. Where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

After the service on Saturday the family would ask for some private time for them to grieve.

Sylvia Rodites Georgeadis

Sylvia Georgeadis, 67, of Saratoga Springs, NY passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 8, 2013 after a courageous battle with breast cancer that spanned over the last ten years.  She was able to find the best in every day and was able to thank God for every one she lived.  Sylvia was born on February 5th, 1946 in New Kensington, PA.  She was the daughter of the late Pete and Mary Rodites of New Kensington, Pennsylvania.  Sylvia was the high school sweetheart and wife of Alexander Georgeadis for over 49 years.  Sylvia moved to South Windsor, Connecticut in 1964 where she lived for 40 years.  She was a legal secretary in Hartford, South Windsor and Vernon, Connecticut for several years.  Sylvia also served as president of the South Windsor YW Club where she and her husband enjoyed the many people they met while living there.  In 1985 Sylvia took a job as a guidance secretary at South Windsor High School where she worked until her retirement in 2006.  She so much enjoyed working with the guidance department that was a second family to her.  She loved all the students she was able to help through the years with their college search process.  They loved calling her "Mrs. G." 

Some of Sylvia's favorite pastimes were reading, cooking, and taking college courses at the local community college.  Her best times were those spent with her husband and children by birth and by marriage as well as her six grandchildren.  They were all the joy of her life.  Sylvia loved watching her grandchildren finding joy in the same things she once enjoyed as a child.  She was a long time member of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Hartford, CT.  She was also an editor of the church newspaper, "The Saint George Herald," and also the "St. George Consecration Book."  After retiring to Saratoga Springs, NY she became a member of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany, NY. 

She is survived by husband Alexander,  son,  Nicholas and Amy Georgeadis and a daughter Maria and Josh Muldner -all of New York State.  Besides them, she is also survived by six loving grandchildren: Austin, Alexis, Marina, Juliana, Thomas, and Mitchell.  Sylvia is also survived by a sister Anita and George Burgard of East Pittsburgh, PA. as well as her husband's siblings and their children and grandchildren.   

The funeral service will be held on Monday Nov. 11, 2013, 11:00 AM, at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church located at 440 Whitehall Road in Albany, NY. 

Friends and family may call on Sunday Nov. 10, 2013 from 3:00-7:00PM with a memorial service at 6:30 at Compassionate Funeral Care located at 402 Maple Avenue (Rt. 9) in Saratoga Springs, NY.  

Interment in Maplewood cemetery Saratoga Springs, NY.

A luncheon will be held following the burial in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Frieda Rhodes

Frieda Rhodes, 87, of Saratoga Springs passed away on Saturday November 2nd 2013 at Saratoga hospital. 

Born in Wels, Austria, she is the daughter of the late Matthaus Leopoldsberger and Anna Schürrer.

She worked for many years as a nurse's aide at Maplewood Manor Nursing Home.

Frieda was an avid animal lover. She especially loved

horses. She was a horse owner and loved to bet on them. 

She was also a member of the Saratoga Harness Hall of Fame,

the Old Timer's Club, she was also a former member of the Harness

Horsewomen's Assoc, and a volunteer at the Saratoga Harness

Hall of Fame.

Frieda always loved playing cards and many other games. 

 She survived by her nieces and some very special friends.

 Private services will be held in her honor at a later date.
