  6. Rest in Peace Uncle Jay! You were such an awesome "Ambassador of Fun" every summer when we visited from California. One of my earliest and fondest memories were the times we spent on Grandma's island. I remember the little beach, the rickety dock, and of course your huge beaming smile : ) I cant remember a time when you weren't smiling. I actually associate that happy place from my childhood with your big smiling head! You loved to watch us run around playing, exploring, and getting rowdy - living in the moment, not a care in the world. Simply put, you loved. Now that I am grown up with children of my own I realize that your kind of love, this "Uncle Jay Love" is the secret to a happy life. When the pressure and stresses of this world seem unbearable, when all is lost - I can just remember your smiling carefree face and realize that stuff isn't really important.

Thanks Jay, for letting me in on the secret...

Your favorite nephew from California -

Jay was a wonderful friend for over 30 years. He made you smile everyday. His family is the most amazing, loyal and loving group of people that you would be privileged to be considered as a friend. I am so blessed to have had him for a friend.
Don and I will miss our monthly dinner engagements, but Jason will remain in our hearts forever.

  10. Joan - I was so sad to read of Jay's passing. I always remember Jay's first day of work at the Arsenal when he came into my office and asked about you and then told me that you were the girl he was going to marry! And he did!! Jay was a wonderful man and had the ability to put a smile on anyone's face. Remember that our loved ones never truly leave us, they live on in the memories that they shared and the lives they have touched.

  13. For the past ten years Jay was our volunteer each Wednesday morning. He loved to jog the minds of our senior citizens. Our building wasn't his only stop, he went all over....a different day, a different Assisted Living or Nursing Home. He loved what he did and we loved him. Jay became one of us, a familiar face, and a smile we could count on. There were so many reasons why Wednesdays Word Jumble with Jay was one of our very favorites. In addition to word jumble he brought stories about Joan, his daughters and grandchildren, he gave us his personal movie review from his weekly siblings outing and talked about his latest adventure, near and far. Jay introduced us to Cards For Soldiers and Books for Soldiers, which we will carry on in his honor. Thank you Jay for being the most kindhearted, unselfish man we have met. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  14. Uncle Jay was one of the greatest men I know. He was always willing to help others in any way he could. He had a great positive attitude and disposition, he never let life get him down or take away his great smile. Growing up he was like my second dad, someone I could always talk to and someone who helped me put things in perspective. Uncle Jay was always there for me and he helped to shape the man I am today. I was truly blessed to have him in my life and I will miss him dearly. There will be a great void in my heart but I will honor him by trying to emulate his positive attitude and his zest for life and the people he loved. God bless you uncle Jay and thank you for being such a big part of my life. I love you, rest in peace.

  17. Jay was the most kind and friendliest man I have ever met -- anyone meeting him for the first time would feel they had a friend. He could carry on a conversation about almost anything that would interest whoever he was with. I am sure going to miss his great smile and conversation on our trips to the movies. Rest in peace, dear friend.

  18. Jay was a really great person and I feel very blessed that I got to meet and know him. I thank Kathy for allowing me to meet all you Hoenigs, you are all wonderful people. Laura, you are a wonderful daughter and I am so glad that you got back to NY to spend time with your dad and your family. You know what is most important, and you did it. You are very strong.

Jay helped me be closer to my own father, as my father also worked at the Watervliet Arsenal. Jay spent a lot of time telling me all about how you can visit the Arsenal and look through the museum. It is one of my fondest memories taking my own father there, and seeing how happy it made him to tell us about his job there and to see it after so many years.

And I have Jay to thank for that memory. I know he is going to be living it up and toasting to us in heaven.

    Love,
    Melissa Mele
